Cognitive and academic achievement
At Q Psychology, we provide comprehensive cognitive assessments and academic assessments for children, teenagers, adults, and older adults across Melbourne and Geelong.

Our psychologists help to understand cognitive profiles in learning, memory, and thinking skills at every stage of life. Our team provides compassionate, inclusive, and affirming care tailored to each individual's needs. Services are available at our St Kilda psychology clinic, Carlton clinic, and Geelong practice, with services also available at our Colac location.
About Q Psychology’s Cognitive and Academic Assessment Services
Assessment protocols vary based on several factors, therefore, we will work with you to best understand what you are hoping to achieve from the assessment. Currently, we are able to offer the Wechsler Intelligente Scale for Children – Fifth Edition (WISC-V), the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV), and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Third Edition (WIAT-III). At the conclusion of the assessment, your psychologist will provide you with a comprehensive report which details the assessment results and includes recommendations for ongoing support. Where these assessments are conducted as part of an autism and/or ADHD assessment, the fees are included in those assessments. For more information, see our Autism & ADHD Assessments page.
What is a Cognitive Assessment?
A cognitive assessment is a structured evaluation that measures key areas of executive functioning, such as memory, attention, reasoning, problem-solving, and information processing. Exploring these abilities provides valuable insight into a person’s learning strengths, challenges, or changes in cognitive functioning over time. At Q Psychology, we conduct each cognitive ability assessment with care and professionalism, ensuring results are clear, practical, and easy to understand. Our goal is to give individuals, families, and professionals the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about learning, wellbeing, and support.

Cognitive assessments for children and adolescents
A cognitive assessment for children and adolescents provides valuable insight into how a young person thinks, learns, and processes information. These assessments help identify learning difficulties, developmental differences, or giftedness, and can highlight the underlying reasons for challenges with school performance or academic progress. Our psychologists work closely with parents to ensure results are clear and practical, while also collaborating with teachers and schools to support effective learning strategies. Each child’s cognitive assessment and academic assessment is conducted in an affirming and inclusive manner, with tailored recommendations designed to help children and teens thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Adult and Elderly Cognitive Assessments
Cognitive assessments for adults and older adults provide clarity on thinking skills, memory, and problem-solving. For working-age adults, a cognitive assessment can highlight strengths, guide career planning, or recommend workplace accommodations to support success. For older adults, a cognitive assessment for the elderly may help identify age-related changes, including early signs of dementia, offering families reassurance and guidance. At Q Psychology, we approach every cognitive ability assessment with compassion and respect, ensuring that results are delivered sensitively and with practical recommendations that promote confidence, wellbeing, and independence at every stage of life.
Academic Achievement Assessments
At Q Psychology, our academic assessment services evaluate core skills such as literacy, numeracy, written expression, and other areas essential for learning success. These assessments provide a clear picture of a student’s academic strengths and challenges, whether at the primary, secondary, or tertiary level. Our academic achievement services can identify specific learning difficulties, inform school-based adjustments, or support applications for extra time or resources. By translating results into practical recommendations, we help create personalised learning plans that build confidence and improve outcomes. Melbourne Families, educators, and students can rely on Q Psychology for clear guidance, affirming care, and evidence-based strategies.
Inclusive and Neuroaffirming Care
We prioritise inclusive care, ensuring every client feels respected, affirmed, and supported. Our services are LGBTQIA+ affirming and neuroaffirming, recognising and valuing diverse ways of thinking, learning, and experiencing the world. Every assessment considers clients’ identities, strengths, and lived experiences, creating a safe and empowering space for exploration and understanding. By embedding inclusivity into all our assessments, we ensure that results are meaningful, relevant, and personalised, helping individuals, families, and schools make informed decisions with confidence.
